We are seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to work with a collaborative team of researchers from Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, and UBC (Vancouver). The research concerns the role of genomics knowledge and technologies in rainbow trout and steelhead salmon policy and management in Western Canada. We are looking for a postdoctoral research fellow with interest and experience in the human dimensions of conservation science and/or the social sciences (such as, but not limited to, environmental sociology, knowledge mobilization and exchange, science and technology studies, and/or studies of expertise and experience). The research fellow will play a key role in analyzing and synthesizing data, and preparing manuscripts for publication.
The position is available to be filled starting March or April 2020, with some flexibility in start date, and is expected to be of one-year duration with possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability. The research fellow will be mentored by Dr. Steven Cooke at Carleton University and Dr. Nathan Young at the University of Ottawa. Position Duties
- Analyze qualitative and quantitative data relating to applications of genomics research on rainbow trout and steelhead salmon, including public and stakeholder perceptions and priorities, knowledge exchange and mobilization, and policy and management implications.
- Work with colleagues and graduate students to prepare manuscripts for publication.
- Coordinate meetings and workshops that bring together academic and non-academic stakeholders to communicate findings and engage in knowledge co-production activities.
Selection Criteria
Skills and Qualifications
- PhD in the area of ecology, biology, sociology, and/or related social sciences. (Essential)
- Expert knowledge in one or more aspects of the human dimensions of conservation science or resource management; and/or in empirical social sciences (Essential)
- Ability to establish effective relationships between academics and the wider community (Essential)
- Strong technical skills in one or more of the following areas: quantitative social science data analysis, qualitative social science data analysis (Essential)
- Knowledge of genomics and/or freshwater fisheries management policies and procedures in Western Canada (Desirable)
Experience
- Contribution to research in the form of peer-reviewed publications in the international literature (Essential)
- Previous work with academic and non-academic partners on an applied scientific project. (Desirable)
